This mixed media triptych was originally conceived as a vertical triptych with one panel hanging above the other, but I kind of like the off center 2:1 configuration.

Notice that during the assembly of this piece, I carefully maintained the spacing between each panel with pieces of wood.  Of course, the highly reflective parts made photography a nightmare.

I am going to finish the pieces with a layer of clear epoxy resin.  Since that only adds to the photography headaches, these photos were taken before the epoxy was applied.

"PASSIONATE"

This painting is an experiment.  It's painted on yupo paper that was texturized with spider webbing  - the kind you string around your house on Halloween.  I used acrylic paints, but the effect is better using Robert Doak watercolor concentrates.

Using acrylics alters the process somewhat because when they dry, they tend to trap the webbing, making it hard to remove.  The photo does not show the intricate color flows very well.

"CELEBRATION"

This is my demo piece from the second Littleton, CO, Metals and Mixed Media Workshop I gave over the weekend.  This piece is very three dimensional because the texture on the top part is made from cedar bedding that you would buy at the pet store for your pet hamster or gerbil.  While you're at the pet store, pick up some kitty litter because that makes great texture too.

The normal color of the cedar bedding is reddish brown and cream.  I enhanced that a bit. There is also some black sand sprinkled in there and some combusted red foil.  The wavy curly Q line is dimensional fabric paint by Tulip.  Click on the image for a close up view.

Once again, the workshop was a really fantastic experience, judging from the reactions I received from the artists in attendance.  We experimented with ironing tyvek, torching metals, drilling holes for nails and brads, epoxy resin application, and using all kinds of unique and fabulous materials.

Most of the artists were experienced primarily with watercolors, so the versatility of acrylic paints, along with all the cool effects and unusual materials I introduced, really got their creative juices flowing.

"HIGH COUNTRY"

I know this is not an abstract, but read on - it's for a good cause.
I painted this 12x6 inch oil painting last year.  This fall scene is inspired by the mountains in southwestern Colorado when the aspens are golden, the sun warm, and the air is dry and crystal clear.

I have chosen to donate the sale proceeds from this painting to the Help Japan Painting Challenge being conducted by Daily Paintworks. The painting is an oil on cradled panel - no framing necessary.

You can own a piece of Colorado (sort of), and we will both get the satisfaction of knowing we contributed a small part to the massive relief project going on in Japan.

"DESERT GLOW"

This 6x6 inch abstract was a demo in one of my recent workshops.  It features painted foils and crushed shells.  I think it's a fun piece and demonstrates the appeal of a very limited palette.

"EGG ON RED"

This is my entry in the DPW challenge where we were to paint a white object on a colorful background.  Of course a white object will reflect the colors that are close to it.

Painting this egg reminded me of a drawing class I took as a freshman in college.  We each had to bring a hard boiled egg to class.  We spent three weeks drawing our eggs - first just the outline, then we added shading and shadows.

STOLEN ARTWORK (again) ! Carol Nelson Fine Art

Well, it's happened again.  The Chinese factory artists are selling this work of mine on ebay as an original.  I painted this quadtych for Dick Blick a couple years ago to advertise their canvas four packs.  Blick company paid me and now owns the original.

An alert artist remembered my painting from the Blick catalog and saw it for sale on ebay.  Check out this link:

If you check out the seller, it even shows Chinese artists in a factory-like setting reproducing other artists work - they paint over a photo reproduction.  It's a rip off for the original artist and for the buyer who thinks he's buying an original.

I'm going to take special precautions in posting multicanvas paintings because the rip off crooks seem to like diptychs, triptychs, etc.  I'm sorry if the image quality is not very good, but I have to take precautions against this sort of fraudulent practice.

 Antoine references his studio and paintshop.  So he sells from the painting sweatshops in China that copy other artists. Antoine is not an artist - he's just the middle man who pushes this bogus art. Unfortunately, people are buying these mass produced copies to the detriment of genuine creative artists who produce their own work.

The composition for this geologic abstract is cruciform - the design I choose most frequently.  You can see the large amount of texture on this piece - especially the little raised cubes which have silver leaf on top of them.  I meticulously added the silver leaf adhesive with a small applicator to each cube.

This painting is a collection of found objects, art papers, leather,  aluminum, brads, nails, and acrylic paints.  These collages are a lot of  fun to make and are one of the most popular things I teach artists  about in my workshops.

I always encourage artists to use a limited palette because with so many different texture materials, having all the colors closely coordinated has a unifying effect on the final piece.

This painting is a demo I did at my workshop in Littleton over the weekend.  It has glazed aluminum, copper tacks, hammered copper wire, and sea shell fragments and is covered with a crystal clear coating of epoxy resin.  The metals and the epoxy make it very difficult to photograph.
